How the Day Runs

Meet in San Gimignano, ride the Chianti countryside, stop, eat, ride back.

  1. Check You Can Actually Ride

Tuscan vespa tours are self-drive. Operators state it plainly: you must know how to ride a scooter, be 18 or over, and bring a valid licence. This is not a formality and it is checked at the meeting point.

  2. Do the Practice Loop Honestly

Every operator runs a short familiarisation before the group sets off, usually in a yard or a quiet lane. If you are not comfortable at the end of it, say so - the good operators will move you to the passenger seat rather than send you into the hills.

  3. Ride in Convoy, Not Alone

You follow a guide along a set route through the Chianti hills. The roads are quiet, winding and beautiful, and you are never navigating. That is what makes a self-drive day workable for a competent-but-rusty rider in a way Roman traffic never is.

  4. Eat and Drink, Then Ride Again

Almost every Tuscan tour is built around a lunch and a wine tasting at a winery. Operators manage this carefully because everyone rides afterwards - expect tasting portions rather than a long lunch with a bottle.

The Independent Guide

You Are Buying Back the Transfer

Priced like the Florence tours, but without the hour at each end getting out of the city and back.

The case for a hill departure

Almost every Tuscan vespa tour leaves from Florence, and a good part of the day goes on getting out of the city and back into it.

That is fine if you are staying in Florence. If you are staying in San Gimignano, Volterra, Siena or anywhere in that part of Tuscany, it is a poor trade: you drive into the city, ride out of it, ride back, and drive home.

This tour starts where the riding does. At about $139 it is priced between the cheapest Chianti day at $110 and the certified Florence tour at $174 — so you are buying back the transfer time rather than paying a premium for the location.

See San Gimignano dates

It is not a town tour

Worth being clear: you start in San Gimignano; the riding is the countryside around it.

The town’s towers are best seen on foot and need no vespa at all. What the departure gives you is immediate access to the vineyards, cypress roads and hill villages that the Florence tours spend an hour reaching.

See the town separately on the same trip — the two fit together well, and the tour usually returns you where you started.

Same rules as the rest of the market

Self-drive, licence required, 18 or over, prior scooter experience. The listing describes exactly the pattern the whole market follows: “set off on your Vespa tour through the Chianti countryside, follow your guide along scenic Tuscan roads”.

If the licence is the obstacle, the passenger and electric alternatives apply here as they do everywhere else in Tuscany.

Lunch and wine are included, as on almost every tour in this market — that structure is why Tuscan days cost $110–232 while Rome’s vespa products run $23–44.

The honest weakness

Ninety-one reviews is a real sample and it is well short of the Florence leaders, which carry 991 and 804.

If you book on evidence depth, that matters and you should weigh it. The trade is straightforward: a thinner sample, but a materially better use of your day if you are already in the hills.

If you are staying near Siena

San Gimignano is the closer of the two main departures. The other direction gives you the Val d’Orcia — a tour from Montepulciano and Pienza at about $127, and a Val d’Orcia day at about $232.

That is a genuinely different landscape: broader, emptier, and the light the region is famous for. Neither departs from Siena itself, so check the meeting point against where you are sleeping. On a full-day tour, the drive to the start is a real part of the cost.

What Riders Say

4.9/5 from 91 verified guests

"An unforgettable day that will be remembered not only for the fantastic Vespa route to San Gimignano. During the tour, I had circulatory problems, and the team took exceptionally good care of me: calmly, professionally, and with genuine warmth. A car with a driver was immediately arranged to take me safely to the winery. There I was able to rest and then enjoy a wonderful wine tasting and a delicious lunch. The organization was exemplary, and the team was extremely friendly. A tour that I can highly recommend despite the incident."
