How the Day Runs

Out of Florence, into the hills, a winery in the middle, and back.

  1. Check You Can Actually Ride

Tuscan vespa tours are self-drive. Operators state it plainly: you must know how to ride a scooter, be 18 or over, and bring a valid licence. This is not a formality and it is checked at the meeting point.

  2. Do the Practice Loop Honestly

Every operator runs a short familiarisation before the group sets off, usually in a yard or a quiet lane. If you are not comfortable at the end of it, say so - the good operators will move you to the passenger seat rather than send you into the hills.

  3. Ride in Convoy, Not Alone

You follow a guide along a set route through the Chianti hills. The roads are quiet, winding and beautiful, and you are never navigating. That is what makes a self-drive day workable for a competent-but-rusty rider in a way Roman traffic never is.

  4. Eat and Drink, Then Ride Again

Almost every Tuscan tour is built around a lunch and a wine tasting at a winery. Operators manage this carefully because everyone rides afterwards - expect tasting portions rather than a long lunch with a bottle.

The Independent Guide

The Chianti Day, and the Option That Makes It Work for Everyone

One listing solves the licence problem three different ways. That is rarer than it should be.

Why this is the default Chianti booking

Not because it is the cheapest or the most expensive. Because it is the one that does not exclude anyone.

The listing spells out three ways to travel the same route:

  • Solo vespa - your own machine, licence and experience required
  • Double vespa - one of you drives, one rides behind
  • Electric car or Tuk-Tuk - no licence, no riding, same day

In a market where every other product opens with “you must know how to ride a scooter and bring a valid driver’s license”, that flexibility is the most valuable thing on the shelf. A group of four where two ride and two do not can all book the same tour.

It also carries 4.8 from 991 verified reviews, the deepest sample in Tuscany.

See Chianti dates

What the route actually is

The hills between Florence and Siena: cypress avenues, vineyards, a hilltop village or two, and a winery.

The riding is as much the point as the destinations. Chianti’s roads are quiet, winding and well surfaced with almost no heavy traffic — which is precisely what makes a self-drive convoy sensible here and unthinkable in Rome. You follow a guide, so you are never navigating.

It does not usually reach Siena or San Gimignano. If a specific hill town is what you want, book for it rather than hoping.

The lunch, and the wine you have to ride after

Every Tuscan vespa tour is built around a winery stop with lunch and a tasting. That structure is why the baskets sit at $110–232 while Rome’s vespa products run $23–44 — you are buying most of a day with food in it.

The obvious problem answers itself sensibly: operators pace the tasting because everyone rides afterwards. Expect tasting portions rather than a long lunch with a bottle, and expect the guide to manage it.

And if a proper Chianti lunch with the wine that belongs to it is what you actually came for — take the e-car option. That is not a consolation prize; it is the honest choice, and it is on this listing precisely so you can make it.

Price against the rest of the shelf

At about $133 it sits below the certified Florence tour at $174 and well below the premium small-group day at $232, while carrying more reviews than either.

The cheapest way into this market is about $110, and it offers riding with a guide instead of solo. The most expensive Tuscan days run to $238 for a four-hour electric tour.

None of that spread is about better roads or better wine. It is group size, departure point, what is included at lunch, and whether the operator is certified.

If you cannot ride

You are not locked out — you are choosing a different seat.

Take the e-car option on this tour, or the passenger seat on a double vespa, or one of the electric vespa products where the simpler machine is the deciding factor. All three give you the full Chianti day.

We have put every non-riding route on one page, because the search results bury them and reading fifteen listings to find them is a poor use of an evening.

We are not affiliated with any operator or winery. Tours here are sold by GetYourGuide and we earn a commission if you book through our links, at no extra cost to you.

What Riders Say

"This was our favourite ‘experience’ on our 3 nights in Florence. We met up with our friendly and knowledgeable guide and went on a 25 mins coach trip that took in great views of the city and took us into Chianti country - beautiful rural countryside. We were met by friendly and patient instructors who put all the drivers through a straight-forward Vespa test before setting off on a 20 mile ride. Tip - there is a small amount of space under the seat of the Vespa to store your belongings. We stopped off for a half hour break and proceeded to a very rural scene where there was an olive producing farm - we had a good Tuscan meal with several types of wine. Later we were picked up and went back via bus - so everyone could have a drink! All In all a great time and highly recommended!!"

"Great trip! The ground transportation to the location was well arranged, and the guides knew a lot about the area and took good care of the group. The wine tasting combined with lunch was wonderful. This trip is highly recommended."

"We had such an amazing time on our Vespa tour from Florence through the beautiful Tuscan countryside and vineyards! Elera and Charlotte were absolutely wonderful and made the entire experience so much fun from start to finish. They kept us laughing, made the day feel special and memorable, and most importantly, made us feel completely safe and comfortable on the Vespas. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Italy and an experience we’ll never forget. Highly recommend!"

"Our guides were great and practiced safe riding. I had to ride with my hubby because I failed my Vespa test (despite practicing a couple of hours before the trip). I’m glad I failed the test because the ride would have been hard for someone in the learning stage like myself. Hubby is a motorcycle rider. We got some rain on our halfway point where we stopped at a little town but the guides were prepared to get the bus to pick us up so they maintain focus on safety. They also stopped for a nice photo op. The included meal at the winery was simple but delicious. One of the best I’ve had in Italy."

"We had the absolute best day with Cristina & Sara - they took us around on the Vespas through hills and a small town. Being a beginner, I was a little anxious, but they made us feel safe the entire time! The lunch stop & wine tasting was also great! I would absolutely so it again& couldn't recommend it more!"

Alishea Elizabeth Australia

"Although we couldn't ride the Vespas, which was the main attraction of the sightseeing tour, due to the bad weather, the experience was very good since the team of tour guides and the logistics adapted to the situation. The ride in the small Topolino cars was still very interesting and fun."

"Leila and Francesca gave us a truly unique day. Mille grazie"
